Artist’s Statement

I work with the imagery of archetypes. For thirty three years, I’ve explored everything from pyramids and sacred geometry to christian religious symbols, but there has been no single iconic image more important to me than the heart, and all of the complexities associated with it. For me, the heart is the perfect metaphor to express the experience of life. When I began working with this iconic image, I didn’t realize that I was beginning a journey into art as catharsis, or how important it would become to me. I’ve have often combined heart imagery with my own exploration of women’s issues.

Additionally, I’ve worked extensively with skulls, frequently combing them with hearts.  For if hearts are the perfect metaphor for life, then skulls are the obvious symbol of death. Working with this taboo image, I’ve come to realize they are as much a part of life as they are representative of death. Making skulls into objects of beauty and ancestor honoring has truly connected life and death for me, becoming a catalyst to fully live and express that fullness of life in my art.
